Know The Signs of Overheating

- Excessive panting
- Excessive thirst
- Unconsciousness
- Lethargy
- A deep red or purple tongue
Skip The Long Walk When It’s Hot Outside
When it’s predicted to be a hot day, adjust your walk time with your pup. Choose an early morning or evening walk time.
Keep an Extra Eye on Small Dogs, Dogs with Short Noses, and White-Colored Ears
The U.S. Humane Society says dogs with short noses typically have difficulty breathing, so a hot day can make it even more ruff! Animals with white-colored ears are more likely to develop skin cancer, so limit sun exposure during high UV days. Short dogs absorb the heat more quickly since they are closer to the hot ground.
Avoid Hot Asphalt
Unless your pup has some high-top sneakers or other paw coverings, that pavement can burn the pads of their paws. A good measure of whether the pavement is too hot for your dog is to hold your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds. If you can leave it without discomfort, that pavement is ok for your dog.
