Ah, Father’s Day. The one day a year when Dad gets to take a load off, kick back and relax while receiving gifts from his family to express their love and appreciation for everything he does for them. While unwrapping yet another tie and package of socks surely thrills Dad to no end, sometimes he might appreciate something a bit more useful around the home as his gift instead. Maybe you could even do both! He’d probably love to slide on a brand-new pair of fuzzy socks while knowing some of the tasks around the house were getting taken care of.
Make Dad’s day even more special by tackling these quick and easy DIY maintenance projects. They won’t take too long, and you don’t need to be an expert in home maintenance to figure out how to do them. The experts at Acree Plumbing, Air & Electric will walk you through how to perform each of them effectively, so you’ll know you’ve got everything you need to properly take care of them. For even more maintenance advice – or if you’d just prefer to let the professionals handle it all – let Acree take it off your hands!
Do Some Replacements
With all of the heavy-hitting tasks that need minding in the home – like whether the AC is running smoothly or not, or if the ducts may need re-sealing – sometimes the more routine boxes forget to be checked.
- Changing out the batteries in the smoke detectors – and testing them – is one we often neglect. Smoke detectors can be the difference, quite literally, between life and death, so make sure to replace them!
- Likewise, your air filter needs to be changed out every month. It’s easy as can be, and they’re not expensive for the most part.
Clear Out Debris
Depending on where you live, objects could have fallen or been moved near your home or something outside, like the outdoor component to your HVAC unit. Branches, twigs, or other debris can be easily cleared to a place where it won’t pose a threat.
If left uncleared, they can get lodged in the radiator or crash through a window, so walk around the perimeter and give it a quick check.
Test All GFCI Outlets
If you’ve got a lot of outlets where the potential for short-circuiting is high, like near water, then they’re likely equipped with GFCI – Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter – protection. It monitors the current flowing in and out of the outlet and will cut it off if even the smallest difference is detected, before a short has time to spark or lead to a fire.
GFCI Outlets have a small “reset” button on the faceplate to restore power to them in the event the protection kicks in. Go to each one and press the button to ensure they work – if the button pops in, then it’s good. If it doesn’t, however, then a larger issue may be at play – one an electrician might need to take a look at.
