They don’t call it the dog days of summer for no reason! Summer heat can be brutal for everyone, including your pets! Check out these tips to ensure your furry friends stay safe in the summer heat.
Know The Signs of Overheating
Humans can tell when we need to get into a cool space, but our pets can give us a sign when they need the same relief. According to the U.S. Humane Society, signs your pet is overheating include:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Seizure
- Vomiting
- Excessive panting
- Excessive thirst
- Unconsciousness
- Lethargy
- A deep red or purple tongue
Skip The Long Walk When It’s Hot Outside
When it’s predicted to be a hot day, adjust your walk time with your pup. Choose an early morning or evening walk time.
Keep an Extra Eye on Small Dogs, Dogs with Short Noses, and White-Colored Ears
The U.S. Humane Society says dogs with short noses typically have difficulty breathing, so a hot day can make it even more ruff! Animals with white-colored ears are more likely to develop skin cancer, so limit sun exposure during high UV days. Short dogs absorb the heat more quickly since they are closer to the hot ground.
Avoid Hot Asphalt
Unless your pup has some high-top sneakers or other paw coverings, that pavement can burn the pads of their paws. A good measure of whether the pavement is too hot for your dog is to hold your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds. If you can leave it without discomfort, that pavement is ok for your dog.
Could You Give Them a Summer Style?
Many breeds grow out their coats for warmth in the winter, and some shed them when it gets warmer. Frequent brushing or a summer cut can help them transition from one season to the next. If your dog exhibits signs of overheating, you need to cool your canine down immediately. You can cool your dog down in summer by doing these things, according to the American Kennel Club:
- Find a shady spot to get your dog out of the sun and the heat
- Apply ice packs under their front legs and chest
- Pour cold water over their head and body
- Could you encourage them to drink water?
- Use a cooling mat for them to lie down on
- Find an air-conditioned space
