There’s nothing quite like a cool summer evening, running barefoot through freshly cut grass with your favorite furry friend. Spending time with a pet is something we all cherish, and it never fails to bring a smile to our faces. However, we always need to be mindful of the heat levels our pet is experiencing, because they’re just as at risk for overheating as we are – and it can be hard to notice all the signs if you’re not keenly aware of what they look like.
To be on the safe side, it’s prudent to take precautions ahead of time to make sure pets stay as cool as possible, especially in a hot and humid climate like the one we endure here in Tampa. The best thing you can do is keep a watchful eye on them to identify times when they’re getting too hot, but there are also a handful of easy-to-implement ways you help keep your pet cool in the summer. Acree Plumbing, Air & Electric wants all of our neighbors to stay happy and comfortable, so we’d love to work with you and your family to find the best ways to make your home the relaxing place it deserves to be!
Keep the Humidity Level Down
Unlike humans, our pets don’t sweat. They get rid of excess heat through panting and through their paws, so when the humidity is too high, they can’t properly cool themselves down. Taking steps to reduce humidity in your home – like purchasing moisture-absorbing plants, or investing in a dehumidifier – will drastically help your pet out.
Have a Pool Party!
Like we said, pets shed heat through their paws as well as through panting. One fun way to cool them down is to get a smaller-sized kiddie pool and fill it up with water, so that your pet can frolic and relax in a comfortable place. They’ll be grateful, even though they might not be able to express it!
Grooming is Essential
While you shouldn’t necessarily shave them down all the way – that can be counterproductive to some breeds of pets – regular trims are recommended. Extra hair ends up trapping heat that hurts your pet, so be sure to stay on top of a consistent grooming schedule.
Be Smart About Exercise
Some breeds of dogs require regular exercise, otherwise they’ll be bundles of pent-up energy in your home that you won’t be able to calm down. When you take them for a walk, a jog or a trip to the local dog park, aim to do so when the temperature is cooler. Mornings and evenings are ideal exercise times, as opposed to the afternoon.
Have Safeguards at the Ready
No matter how much you prepare, you won’t always be able to keep your pet’s temperature as low as it should be. In the event that their internal heat level accidentally becomes too high and dangerous, it’s smart to have emergency cooling supplies ready. Cooling packs and blankets are good precautions to take.
Hopefully you and your pet stay icy cool all summer long and can enjoy even more quality time together. Whether you’re a first-time pet owner or a seasoned veteran, these tips will be helpful to you, and we hope they serve you and your pet well.
